Nirvana

Nirvana

UK based progressive rock band, Nirvana, formed in 1967, were primarily active in the late 1960s and early 1970s – and remain still sporadically productive to the present day.

The band was formed in the summer of 1967 in an era when psychedelia and baroque pop/rock music was key. The band consisted of two songwriter/performers: Greek-born Alex Spyropoulos and Irish-born Patrick Campbell-Lyons, who met in London. They produced a number of singles including ‘Rainbow Chaser’, ‘Pentecost Hotel’ and ‘Tiny Goddess’, for the fledgling Island Records label. In October 1967, the band made its debut with a seminal album, produced by Blackwell, entitled ‘The Story of Simon Simopath’. The album was probably the first narrative concept album ever released, predating story-driven concept albums such as the Pretty Things, S.F. Sorrow (‘68), The Who's 'Tommy' and the Kinks 'Arthur' (both ‘69).

The band amicably separated in 1971 but re-grouped in 1985 and remained sporadically productive throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s, even giving wry acknowledgement to their grunge namesakes.
